History of the Commission

Our History

The Smoky River Regional Water Management Commission was officially established on May 28, 2003 by the Lieutenant Governor in Council through Alberta Regulation 250/2003.

Upon establishment, the following municipalities were named members of the Commission:

  • Municipal District of Smoky River No. 130
  • Town of Falher
  • Town of McLennan
  • Village of Donnelly
  • Village of Girouxville

In June 2003, the Commission amended Bylaw #01 to include two seats on the Board of Directors for the Smoky River Water Co-op.

In June 2007, the Village of Donnelly joined onto the distribution system of the Commission.

The Smoky River Water Commission serves the following communities and truck fill stations:

  • M.D. of Smoky River via Smoky River Water Co-op
  • Hamlet of Guy & Guy truck fill
  • Hamlet of Jean Cote & Jean Cote truck fill
  • Town of Falher & Falher truck fill
  • Village of Donnelly & Donnelly truck fill
  • Village of Girouxville & Girouxville truck fill

Note: While the Town of McLennan is officially a member of the Commission, the Town is on its own separate water distribution system and water source. Some Smoky River Water Co-op customers are served from McLennan’s distribution system as well.
